Winter Auto Care Tips #5

TIRES - STAY PUMPED!

In winter temperatures , our tires can actually lose air pressure and that can wreak havoc on gas mileage, tire wear - and most importantly - our safety.

Carry around a tire gauge and learn to read it. Tire pressures can vary between vehicles, so it’s best to consult your owner’s manual to find the proper pressure for your tires.

CHECK YOUR ANTIFREEZE.

Don’t let the neon green color fool you… the additives in antifreeze can expire so it is important to change it out completely every two years – at least.

Not sure when it was changed last? You can easily check its endurance and freeze point with an antifreeze tester (they cost less than five dollars at any auto parts store).

But if you're not a do-it-yourselfer, have it checked at your favorite NAPA AutoCare Center. They have more accurate and reliable testers.

BE PREPARED. There are certain items that you should keep in your car year round in case of an emergency or accident. For winter – add these extras to ensure that you are safe and prepared for anything that comes your way.

A WARM blanket, flashlight, Road flares, sand for traction in snow, shovel, windshield scraper and water bottles in case you break down during the freezing temps.

REPLACE THE BLADES.

Many of us forget about wiper blades until it rains. However, keeping the snow and ice off your windshield keeps you safe and your visibility on icy roads clear. Many of us can stretch out the life of our blades by clearing them off with a paper towel and some glass cleaner, but in the winter – that’s not practical.

It’s best to change them out when the cold weather hits.

It is recommended that you change your blades every two years.

LET THERE BE LIGHT!

Winter means that the days are shorter and our commutes are darker.

It’s important to check that all the lights in your vehicle are fully operating. Change out the ones that are burnt out and if your headlights are foggy or yellow, consider replacing them or look into an easy restoration kit.

Also check to be sure that snow and/or ice is not covering any exterior lights BEFORE you set off on your travels!

Maintenance and Repair Shops; You and Your Vehicle

Reformation Productions - Thursday, July 28, 2016

Modern-day automobiles are complex, as most auto manufacturers are using high technology to make the cars more durable. However, being machines, automobiles also encounter the usual problems related to breakdowns as well as normal wear and tear. Repairing automobiles can be very confusing and finding someone qualified to make the correct repairs is becoming even more difficult.

It's a common proverb that "prevention is better than cure." Similarly, the best way to avoid many auto repair expenses is to be prepared, have basic knowledge as to how your vehicle works and how to identify common car problems, and do routine maintenance according to the instructions of your vehicle’s manufacturer. Your local car repair and maintenance shop can help with this. It's important to know a good technician, the kinds of questions to ask, and your consumer rights. Choosing the right repair shop can be the most difficult part, and the best way to solve this problem is to do your research and ask for recommendations from friends, family, and other people you trust.

One can call around to find the best deals in your area for many common procedures but that can mislead customers. Price-shopping can lead someone to a shop that cuts corners, so be careful. But do compare pricing enough to make sure the shop isn’t poised to take advantage of you. Also, you can compare warranty policies for repairs and see who stands behind their work and how deep their efforts go in this area. While choosing an auto technician, look for shops that display various certifications. Certification ensures that the technicians are acquainted with the standards of knowledge and capabilities in desired technical segments. Although all repair shops do not offer any "standard warranty" on repairs, it is important to understand what is covered under your warranty and see it in writing. Furthermore, you can check with the Federal Trade Commission or your state or local consumer protection agency for information about your warranty rights.

It is advisable to prevent common troubles like leaks and smoke, overheating problems, flat tires and the like with proper maintenance and care of your vehicle.

Put in a bit of extra leg work and research in your area, and it will reward you both now and with any future servicing and any costly repair jobs you may need to get done.
